Background of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th, recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also calling for gender equality and women’s rights. The roots of this significant day can be traced back to the early 20th century, amidst the burgeoning labor movement and the fight for women’s suffrage.
The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America. This event aimed to honor the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against poor working conditions and unfair labor practices. The idea for an international celebration arose during the Second International Socialist Women’s Congress in 1910, held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Clara Zetkin, a prominent German activist, proposed the establishment of an annual International Women’s Day to promote equal rights, including suffrage for women. The proposal was met with unanimous approval from over 100 women from 17 countries.
In 1975, during the International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, further establishing its global significance. Each year, the UN selects a theme to focus on specific issues affecting women, promoting awareness and action.
Today, International Women’s Day is recognized worldwide, serving as a platform to highlight ongoing issues such as gender-based violence, inequality in the workplace, and women’s health rights. It is a day for advocacy, celebration, and reflection on the progress made and the work still needed to achieve gender equality.
