Happy One Web Day!
The Internet is a new reality that has developed during the past 50 years into a place where we chat, work, study, and even fall in love. This is a truly social environment for each of us that fosters connections, communication, and collaboration. We’re privileged to live in this century with all the opportunities the Internet gives us.
And today is the right moment to celebrate this human achievement. Globally, 22nd of September is observed as One Web Day.
So happy Internet – One Web – Day to each and every one of you!
Where does One Web Day come from?
The first One Web Day was held in 2006. The initiative was founded by Susan P. Crawford, professor of law at Harvard Law School, with the goal of fostering a greater understanding of the Internet’s impact on society.
“The web is worth celebrating, and so we’re going to do that – and not take it for granted,” she explained. “The idea behind One Web Day is to create an Earth Day for the internet. It is a day to celebrate how important the web is to each of us.”
Each year, One Web Day is celebrated with international events that encourage individuals and communities to reflect on both the benefits and challenges of Internet access. This day serves not only to acknowledge the Internet but also to spark important discussions about its future and the ongoing efforts needed to ensure it remains accessible to all.
By participating in these discussions, individuals can join a global community that cares deeply about the future of the Internet. This engagement underscores the essential need for a free and open web for everyone, promoting awareness and action toward maintaining this vital resource for greater inclusion. On the other hand, this is another opportunity to remind all users that privacy and data security are crucial steps toward fostering a secure and open digital environment where we feel safe and empowered to participate.
